Foodie Sunday

Tonight's dinner was an experiment making gourmet out of leftovers. On Friday night, I made a large amount of rather spicy meatloaf with turkey and bison.

Plenty of leftovers.

Which lead to tonight with Meatloaf au Duvet" or simpler still "Gourmet Stromboli". This came to me while jogging with Oliver and Dave in the park this afternoon.

I was craving swiss chard for some reason. And mushrooms.

One of my favorite simple white bread recipes was used to make the crust. Browned some mushroom slices and leeks with butter, and chopped a bunch of raw swiss chard.

This was layered over the thinly sliced cold meat loaf on the rolled dough, topping with parmesan cheese shavings and mozzarella cheese. Sealed shut and pierced with a fork so that it could vent whilst cooking.

Served this with a simple cucumber, onion, and fresh dill salad and an easy bean/corn salsa.

I guess I was also craving apple cider vinegar. Go figure.

I've had a few of those myself....perfect days.....I remember one summer in college when I went to the lake many Saturdays with my daughter and we played in the sand and water...from about 10 AM to AS LATE as possible.

That's when I felt there was an end in sight. Like the cloud would lift and my future was out there.

Okay, enough of that. I imagine my Mum felt similar on this day. With her beau. Adulthood was just about there. It was there. And this was her beginning.

Her perfect day.

Who knows. Maybe not. But if this were my day....it was.

Baja Wedding

Here are the layouts I did for my Mom and Dad's wedding. If you look closely, you'll notice that I used the owl I did last week on the first page.

Aren't their clothes awesome?! My mom was quite the dresser...always so fashionable and so Audrey (Hepburn). And Dad, he always wore suits (to work). And black. I'll have to load one of the pages of them at a party. All the men wore black, slim ties...and they all smoked. So early 60's. Dad wasn't a wise guy in the Badabing way..but he was pretty smart....one of those geeky mechanical engineers that worked on nuclear stuff...mostly reactor stuff...not the bombs. You know...just sayin'.

Fun and simple design, but geesh...it took all evening on Thursday to put together.

I was surfing around looking for inspiration and this colorful circle card caught my eye. Isn't it great! I didn't do it - MICHELLE did. It was done by one of the Unity designers and uses THIS set.

I think I just might have to borrow this design! There's a couple folks I need to thank.

We were decompressing after the day-o-hell at the office and watching "2012" (yes, such a relaxing flick,HA)....and he kept sticking his tongue out while he was sleeping/laying on his back.

Winter Brew

He sat so still...and JUST as soon as I pulled the camera out and said, "Sit Baby"....acting all like he knew the camera would eat him up.

I've been working on a scrapbook for my mom. This is the opening page.

This picture of her at 6 months is the only baby picture she has. Such a serious look. I wonder what antics the photographer was doing to generate that expression!

Here's my take on it. She didn't really want to sit there while they fiddled with the large format camera. She didn't want to sit still. She wanted to crawl around with her sisters and brothers (of which at that time there were 5) having fun.

Or she was about to tip over because she'd been sitting there long enough and that sit-up jazz was a new skill.

I put this together last night for an upcoming workshop in March. Finished, it measures 7.5L x 2W x 6H.

We are having some warm weather this weekend. Warm for January, that is. It's over 50F right now. I want to say, "awesome", but it concerns me - global warming and all. We should be experiencing 20-30F instead.

But the future of our earth aside, I'm going to enjoy it in the woods in just a bit, jogging with mine pupster (Oliver) and husband.

We didn't get into Mutter's because the gal at the front desk noticed my lil guy covertly stashed in his carrier (that is shaped as a purse). Bummer.

So we wondered the streets in the shopping district until dinner time.

We had dinner at Tinto. Highly recommended.

And no, they didn't notice Oliver tucked away in his bag. He even sampled some delicious tapas now and again, but I think he'd pass on another similar adventure, because:

(1) He was cold walking about, even shivering at times.
(2) It's no fun spending so much time in a pet carrier shaped like a purse even it does mean he gets to spend the day with mum.

I don't even know what to say about my expression, but he's always adorable. And the bag I'm carrying is his covert carrier. We go lots of places with that bag.

We had our holiday part at work today. It's always a feast. Everyone brings a dish (Breakfast, Lunch, or anytime appetizer), and we just eat all day long...or at least I do.

I also play holiday tunes all day from my office. And around lunchtime, we congregate for a few holidays games (to win a little prize), and a gift exchange.

This year we did Greedy Santa, which was great fun. Several gifts exchanged hands a few times, which made it loads of fun!

I was responsible for one of the games and I found a game somewhere on the web and worked it up so that it could be done offline (so we could do it individually for a prize).

Happy Birthday

John turned 21 this weekend and we celebrated with cake! He spent the weekend with his sister - you know, doing the traditional things that a 21 year old does when officiating their ability to drink in public.

If you are a familiar with StampinUp, then you know this image. BUT, when I made the cake, I boyed it up with masculine colors. It was a really fun project and is "clean and simple", but folks, let me assure you that this 'lil cake took essentially all afternoon and evening to design and construct.

Super Fun. And Delish. I used a basic yellow-cake recipe (all home made no box) and yummy home made buttercream frosting. The inside of the cake included a layer of the raspberry jelly I made in August.

So there, an edible masterpiece.

Oh...and our last one year older reminding both my husband and I that we are getting ~~closer to empty nest heaven~~ nothing but older. (ha)

More Beauty in Jim Thorpe

At the bottom of the hill, my little dude and I ventured to the water. The stillness and colors were breathtaking.

Oliver didn't help with the quiet stillness, because, well, he's an active boy, but he did pause for a moment at the water's edge.

We made our back towards the start, following the trail under the bridge.

Notice the ice on the edge of the road. That is probably the remaining snow from the bizarro October snowfall....because it really was a pleasant afternoon.

When we got back to the parking lot, I thought we probably didn't have much time, because I started seeing lots of bikes. I thought (based on their attire and intense expressions) that they were probably the faster ones at the front of the pack.

It wasn't hard to notice John and Dave when they were making their way towards us. My bike (the one John road) is BRIGHT yellow and green....when I saw I it, I knew it was them.

I was impressed. Our timing was pretty awesome. Oliver and I hadn't finished that much before their arrival.

My Little Woodsman

Or rather Woodsdog. While Dave and John mountain biked along a portion of the Rails to Trails project trail in the Poconos, Oliver and I went for a hike on the Glen Onoko trail. It was a beautiful and very steep trail that meandered along a fast moving stream that led a very tall waterfall.

It has quite an intimidating warning sign at the base.

To give you an idea of the steepness, there were times I needed to hoist my little guy up some rocks. Needless to say, I was glad he was wearing his harness and leash.

He's a little bold fella.

Here's a photo of the stream. I love the flare the sun cast on my lens.

Here's a picture of the first level of the falls. Very pretty.

But there's more! This is the main falls. Pretty high, but difficult to discern without a reference point...and Oliver wasn't up to cooperating.

After tooling around at the base of the falls (Oliver kept splashing leaves), we discovered a way to the top.

This was the cherry. Such a beautiful view.

I would not have found it so challenging except for all the new fallen slippery leaves. The leaves posed much anxiety on the way down when we "lost" the trail and found ourselves essentially slip n sliding our way down quite a distance. It was almost a Bear Grils moment. Oliver got quite anxious and actually was growling with nervous impatience because I wouldn't let him go when we were taking a ride down the leaves. I think he thought he could do a better job for himself.

Like I said, my little woodsman.

Bodywork

Here is what I worked on last night and today. I really need to beacon my creative writing muse because I'm having a difficult time coming up with beautiful and melodic names for my artwork. I thought I might call this Butterfly Dreams, but I don't know. That sounds too corny. It is corny.

So I settled with Bodywork. I guess because ... hmmm. Well, I don't know why.

Here's a closeup of the roses I painted on the vine. Used several colors of heavy body acrylics, swirling with my brush to try and make it look like a rose. The leaves were made by quick drawing on colored paper...then I added transparent paints and fiddled with india ink brush markers.

When I was done, my fingers were coated in paint and color. Typical look for me on a weekend or evening.

I am looking forward to next week. I only work on Monday and am taking the remaining days off to vacate my mind of business process flows, requirements, and proof of concept builds.

I am definitely looking forward to spending relaxing time with Dave and Oliver. Poor little Oliver spends so much time giving me the pitiful look from underneath my desk on the days I work from home....because he doesn't get 100% of my attention.

Right this second I'm getting it...and in between trying to get me play with him, he's staring longingly out the back door trying to find something....anything...to bark at.

So, we're off for a jog in the woods. For Oliver, he's off to explore the wilds.

Or so he thinks.

Flowers Brim

Flowers brim even through the cracks in the sidewalk. I started this several weeks ago and finally got around to finishing it 9in between knitting projects). There is quite a bit of texture - I used a hardboard panel and first added some papers, then some paint base coats, some coarse pumice gel medium to add the grains (you can see them the best in the sky) and heavy bodied acrylic paints. Finished with scribbling using a Copic multiliner pen.

An interesting package arrived yesterday...months ago I sent some raw wool to Ohio Valley Natural Fibers to be cleaned and carded for spinning. Seriously...months ago. I had called them once to check on it and was thinking I was going to need to check again. They really have a backlog of wool, it seems!

Anyway, the wool returned is a wonderful super dark color...the color of chocolate. It's fabulous. I guess I'm going to have to spin some soon! Maybe I'll even be able to spin some consistent enough yarn to make another cardigan.

Knitting Up a Storm - Iced

I finished another Christmas present this weekend...actually put the buttons on today! This will be a super cozy and warm sweater. Of course, now that it's done, I can't wear it, because today it was almost 70 degrees! Oh, that's right...it is a present for someone else...I almost forgot. I guess one of these days, I'll have to make myself one.

I should block it...but not sure that it's needed...I'll wait until it's tried on before I decide...that way I can make the fit exact.

Onto the next project.....I am really going to for the 100% handmade gifting again this year, but as usual....I'm behind.

Giant Retro Cowl

Finally finished this cowl. I woke up early this morning to little scratching and chewing noises (there is something poking around our attic setting up winter camp, I fear). All that was left was sewing in the loose ends and positioning the buttons.

These buttons are extremely large, real wood buttons. Such a nice texture that only adds to the splendor of the yarn and pattern (it's a very chunky stitch).

Since the weather has been so lovely the past week, we've been having all kinds of fun in the park walking, chasing leaves (and the occasional squirrel), and jogging.

In preparation, a friend of mine asked if I could make her some red fingerless mitts similar to the pair I made her last year. These turned out so nice and with the extra yard, I decided to go ahead and make a couple more!

Chevron Socks for Chilly Toes

I just finished these cozy socks for the friend of mine who had the motorcycle accident. Thought she might enjoy something pretty and colorful to offset that hospital green and sterile white.

I took them to her today and visited with her, her boyfriend, and her family for a bit. She looked like she was having a pretty good day. Some days she's in quite a bit of pain, but is improving everyday.

She will be leaving the hospital on Monday and transferring to an in-patient physical therapy medical center where she will be busy getting stronger. In order to be able to go home, she'll need to be able to walk with a walker and get in/out of a car.

She's been in the hospital for over 7 weeks. Her recovery has been a series of miracles. Really. Everyone is amazed.

I finished this 'lil project tonight in class. I was skeptical that I would be able to work the jewel into the bezel cup [do not ask why....I shall peer with reluctance at the question], but when I got home, it went in nicely. Pha...Ewe!

And.So. Because it doesn't smell like a delicious treat, Oliver wasn't AT ALL interested in his new jewel.

Precious Sweet Clyde

Clyde-E-Us Minimus

1994 - 2011

We lost Clyde this morning at 4:30 am. He died peacefully at home.

On Tuesday, he really wasn't doing so well, but I had to go into work and was so worried that he would die alone. I felt so sick at heart. He stuck around. I think to say his goodbye's. He waited until I came home and stuck with me that evening. That was our time. Normally he fiddled around, underfoot, begging for scraps while I cooked. This night, he couldn't because he was too weak, so he laid next to me while I crafted.

And then at about 4:15 AM this morning, just a little before Dave normally got up with him to start the morning routine, Clyde started shifting around. Dave went downstairs with him. I think Clyde was waiting to say goodbye to Dave, because that was their special time.

And that is when he was ready to let go.

This is a picture of him at Christmas in 2007 when he was about 13 years old. What a pensive look. Goodness only knows what he was thinking...or what he had just gotten into.

I am really going to miss him. He was a part of my life for so very long. He was such a great little companion and oh, so sweet. He was cautious, obedient, and gentle. He loved attention and understood that his adorable nature drew strangers near. For them, he would would just sit down and wait patiently, until they were satisfied petting him. He loved going on rides and would twirl and bark with delight whenever I mentioned it. He enjoyed everything from shopping to rock climing and camping...especially enjoying walks in nearby White Clay Creek. Although he wasn't so keen on dress-up...he tolerated it, because he knew it was fun for Candace and her friends.

He just wanted to be nearby...always.

So, here's to you, Clyde. I am so lucky to have shared so many years having fun with you. You will hold a sacred place in my heart forever, my furry friend. I'll see you in time, I'm sure, but until then, may you frolic with the angels.

On the Mend

This card is for my friend who is on the mend (the one who survived the motorcycle accident). She has amazed everyone with her recovery, even the hospital staff. What she has yet to overcome is just the time involved in patching herself back together.

I thought this would be a good card for her and hope it puts a smile on her face. She probably feels alot like this mummy right now, because I bet there aren't many areas on her not covered with bandages and casts.

The sentiment I used is from a StampinUp! set from the 2011-2012 catalog. (I just got these yesterday). It has 4 stamps, all with this swirly, vintage feel [Thank You, Happy Birthday, Celebrate Today, and Get Well].

Another photo from vacation. It was a really warm, dry afternoon in Sioux Falls. Doesn't the water look incredibly inviting?

Oliver thought so. He immediately walked up to and sat into the water, but I didn't get a shot, because I was too worried about him getting away from me in the current....or falling off one of the rocks.

Not really sure what was happening in this photo. Caught by surprise, I think Caitlin was standing up after stooping to take a picture.

The angle of her in that position, plus the wide angle of my lens, made her head look oversized in comparison to her feet! I also thought of a Crane, but I am not sure she'd like correlation too much...even if they are PINK.

It was nice seeing my daughter over the 4th holiday. Here we were returning to the car after we tried our first hike.

We attempted two hikes, but were faced with forging very rapid swelled water on both of them after only about half a mile in. While Candace and I were up to the challenge (and even did it across one), neither Dave nor Oliver were interested.

One thing to note....there was a posted sign (that I missed taking a picture of) that warned us of active GRIZZLY bear. Yikes. I'm more than used to Black bear having grown up near the Appalachians in Tennessee, but they eat nuts and berries...not nuts of the human kind like sir grizzles. So, while we were disappointed for the short hikes, we were glad to not have to worry about hungry critters.

Oliver's Accident

Oliver took a head dive into the patio tonight. After jogging with us in the woods, having a blast chasing deer, then running and fetching his favorite ball all night, he ended the evening without a smile on his face. Poor thing.

Visiting the yard before bed, coming around the corner of house from the driveway, running full speed with the biggest happiest grin on his face, it all ended when he jumped full speed toward the patio....and missed.

Instead of landing ON the patio, his face and nose were the first to hit the side of the pavers. I have honestly never hurt a pop so loud. It was dark and quiet outside, but that pop rang in MY ears.

It was liking watching the Road Runner, when the Coyote smacked the cast iron griddle that the Road Runner had instantly placed in front of him during a chase....Remember those scenes, stars and crunched up nose? Well, that's what Oliver looked like when he realized he hurt himself. All crunched up in pain. He even growled a little before he let me pick him up.

Upon inspection, his chin was swelling and he had a pretty good scrape...But I didn't see any blood in his mouth and his teeth were all intact....Still worried (I'm a worry wart about him...he's so tiny)...I was up all night watching him, making sure he aroused regularly. He woke up feeling okay, but I took him to the vet anyway. He didn't want anyone touching that area (would you?) and I was afraid he may have cracked or broken his jaw.

Turns out, he's okay. [PHEW] The vet said, "For a tiny little fella, he's a lot tougher than you'd imagine. Lucky for his sake, he's got a hard head."

Stubbornness aside, I guess I should be happy, eh?

Waiting for Irene

We're sitting here waiting for the worst of Irene. We've hunkered down. Since noon, the rain has been steadily rising and the trees increasing their dance.

I'm not sure my confident sump pump can take the load. They say we'll receive at least...did you hear that...at LEAST... 8" of rain. That means the little guy will be working constantly.

Oliver, unimpressed, remains interested in the birds soaking on the patio, picking up the seeds I scattered earlier. He'd much rather be in the back yard illustrating his might with the squirrels.

Yes, my sweet little Oliver graduated from obedience training tonight....and no, outside of class, he's not that good. He has the cunning ability to understand when he's in school...and when he's not in school.

OK, all kidding aside, he really is so much fun....all that energy wrapped into a tiny 4.5 pound package...and his little eyes just express an enthusiasm that cannot be expressed in words...at least by me.

Motorcyclist seriously hurt as she hits truck in Schuylkill

Above is the article of my friend, Joanne (pictured at top), that was in a serious motorcycle accident yesterday. Please keep her in your thoughts today. She is holding strong, but is in very serious condition.

She came over a blind hill at 45 mph (in a 55 mph zone) facing the back of a semi that had stopped to make a left turn.

Anyway. Please throw a good word her way. She needs collective, good, thoughts and prayers. It just breaks my heart.

Book I'm Currently Reading

I'm currently exploring / learning a little bit about myself in an effort to become better focused on my creative "career". I just bought the e-book above because it focuses on doing just that in a super fun, colorful way. I just started and truly enjoy it already. The exercises are excellent and they are structured in a way that helps me do them quickly, since one of my issues is finding TIME to improve as well as create (especially since I work 40+ hours a week).

Anyway, I thought I would share it with you, because well, if you're like me - a creative person, at some point you might even consider (if you haven't already) trying to find ways to get out from under the day job and focus a little on work that really explores your creative talent.

And this book just might help you do it.

I love summer, don't you? Warm summer days make for dreamy fun. I remember when I was young spending alot of time during the summer months loafing in the woods amongst the wildflowers thinking about my future.

Funny how I still do it. Really. When I jog in White Clay Creek here in Delaware and Pennsylvania, I still dream about my future.

Anyway, here is a card celebrating summer...since for alot of the school bound...it's soon to pass.

Earthy Peace Out Necklace

I have been dabbling with some jewelry creations lately and love the beaded creations I finished recently.

I have noticed that I naturally lean towards earthy colors like greens, browns, yellow ochre, and bone. Not only with jewelry, but I also see the same combinations in the colors I choose for furnishings and painting, my clothes, and even the paper arts I create.

I especially love the ceramic peace bead that I purchased from BeadFreaky (HERE). I love ceramic beads and her selection is earthy and mother goddess and celestial. Just great.

Anyway, the picture is a collection of beaded necklaces and beads and brass chain I created over the coarse of a weekend. Being inspired, I kept all my stuff out in hopes of having time to create several more.

Faith in Nature - Pear

For a meeting on Saturday, I prepared the above card using the new hostess set from the StampinUp! catalog called "Faith in Nature".

It gave me a chance to do a little simple water coloring. The pear is stamped in watercolor ink on watercolor paper. I painted with re-inkers in More Mustard and the new In Color, Lucky Limeade.

After the meeting, I headed back to my desk and worked on a few new beaded jewelry items. I'll try and post those later this week, because I used a couple beads I purchased from ETSY and I really liked her stuff...so I'll be sure and share all the deets when I get the images up.

In the meantime, we're enjoying a bit of a break on the heat/humidity. Thank goodness, because I thought our grass would burst into flames at any moment. In fact, it was so hot this past weekend that I was able to wring sweat out of my shirt like I had dumped in a bucket(I KID YOU NOT).

GROSS, yes I agree....

Well, with that, I'll leave you with thoughts of sweaty pears.

Clyde - Better Days

Over the last two weeks on vacation I had more opportunity to watch Clyde. I feel sad thinking that at 18 years old, he isn't going to be around much longer. It is sad to to know that he can barely see, to know that his heart is so quickly declining, and to watch him struggle to eat and to move about...

Despite his declining health and many issues, I was also amazed that he is still in the game! He still wants to move about. He wants to be around people. He wants to eat and drink. And he definitely seeks attention. So I think there is still alot of him there, which keeps me thinking that it's not yet time.

We will know. He will let us know.

Anyway, I love this picture. It was taken in March 2005, when we went for a walk in New Castle. He was 12.

It doesn't include any inserted photos, because this is being submitted as a sample illustrating some of paper art pieces I'll have available to sale at a local artist studio tour taking place this fall.

I am a person very shy of getting in front of a video camera, so I am always very impressed by those that do. It's weird, tho, because I'm NOT that shy of being on stage or doing public speaking.

I think it's because I don't like to hear my squeaky high voice on reply....I have the same disgust when I hear my voicemail message.

Daily Grind - Cleaning the Dirt

What sort of value can you put on the day after day task of cleaning up after a bunch of thankless folks?

The cleaning staff of our building are generally overlooked. Until recently, I believe they passed in and out of the bathrooms and kitchen areas without much notice.

However, there is this one young woman who is very friendly. Always says hello, etc. She is friendly, polite, and doesn't let herself vanish into our rather politely silent atmosphere.

And it's relentless. She's got the "dirtiest" job I know. And I doubt many notice or say thanks.

I don't know if you have ever worked in a job like this (I did with my mom when I was in high school and college). It sucks.

So, I decided to make her this little token of appreciation ... in celebration of the dirt she removes FOR ME so that I have a clean working environment.

And I hope that she enjoys herself with a friend at the Cheesecake Factory. Because everyone deserves a little indulgence.

This card was super easy to put together...and especially easy with one of the newest releases from the Ippity line (THIS SET). I generally have a hard time working with bright colors (I am more a grunge girl), but this one came together pretty easily....although if you saw the state of my table when I finished, you would have thought otherwise! And I left it all out and scattered, so I'm sure my cats are having a blast about now!

Anyway, enjoy your day....and remember, there's a bunch of folks out there keeping our world a little nicer to look at.

I swear, watching birds fledge their young helps seal the universal understanding of parents. Today, I had the fun of watching the 5 little chickadees leave the nest. It was a most exhausting chore for the parents. They had to coax, feed, and keep abreast of the safety of their nest.

As a parent, can you relate?

I just loved watching. I kept thinking they were saying, "Okay, you're next. Have fun. Life's an adventure. Love you...visit often!"

And that was one little guy that was highly anxious to leave, but annoyed at my Oliver, who was yet again, his vocal, energetic self.

It is hiding a treasure.

Yes, it's embarrassing that it's 6-May and our wreath is still on the door.

But we NOW (not two weeks ago, but NOW) have a good reason....

I guess we just HAVE to leave it up now...at least until we confirm that it will be used for eggs. I haven't heard the birds in the last couple days, so I am thinking they may have abandoned it, because:

(1) They decided nesting in a door-in-use was maybe a bad idea;
(2) They didn't like our cat, who hangs out/around that porch.

In the meantime, it might be a little difficult 'splaining this new wrinkle to the neighbors.
